Album due May 27th

After babies being born, houses being bought, walls being painted, and songs being written, re written and writ again, Montreal's Sunfields have surfaced with a brand new (almost double) record, titled Habitat. Four years after releasing their debut Palace in the Sun, which was once described as the most overlooked album of 2010, the band will unveil their second opus on May 27th. Sunfields is Jason Kent, Philip Burns, Michael B. B. Wright and Chris P. Roberts, all members or ex-members of Kandle & The Crooks, The Dears, Tricky Woo, Soft Canyon, Freelove Fenner.

Since the release of Palace, Sunfields have toured England, played NYC showcases, and have continued touring Quebec and Ontario. First mixed in June 2012 by Adrian Popovich, the band continued recording more and more material until they found themselves with an almost entirely new record, and ultimately a new mixer. This new collection of songs draw on simplicity, abiding themes, and circular undertones.

Habitat is a culmination of road tested songs, spontaneous ditties, and meticulous calculations. With over 22 songs recorded, this album could have easily been a double record, but time is not going anywhere, and Sunfields have enough songs to release a record a year for the next millennia.

Being released via Andrew Rodriguez's (Bodega, Melissa Auf der Maur) brand new label Exit Sign Music, the album was recorded at Breakglass Studios with Jace Lasek, and at Field Recordings (Sunfields' private recording studio). The album was mixed by madman/ghost mixer/compressor happy Graeme Humphrey (Eight and a Half, Simple Plan) on his rewired spaceship mixing board "Stella", and mastered by Guy Hébert (Dan Bigras, Félix Leclerc, Daniel Bélanger).

There is nothing untimely about this album. It will welcome you with open arms and cradle you with warm heart. Here comes the Sun…

Avec Palace in the Sun, le groupe montréalais Sunfields nous offre un premier disque ultra harmonieux et délicieusement enveloppant. ***1/2

Natalia Wysocka, Ici

stirring pinches of Neil Young, Wilco, and CCR aided by rootsy harmonies, bouncy keyboards, and twangy guitar bursts that brings back images of “The Last Waltz” by The Band. Drawing on musical tradition, this is nostalgic rock and roll at it’s finest.

Lonely Vagabond

Entouré de trois musiciens et d’une réalisation canon, Kent enfile des ballades mélancoliques bien senties et, surtout, richement rehaussées d’harmonies vocales opulentes… ***1/2

Olivier Lalande, Voir

...the quartet has emerged with a lovely record, bearing the classy bombast of chamber rock, the intimacy of singer-songwriter fare, the easybreeziness of vintage pop and the grit of good country.

Lorraine Carpenter, Mirror

Full of stunning imagery, coupled with swirling organs, swooping guitars and harmonising that the Eagles would be proud of, Sunfields’ debut album is a piece they can be proud of.

Phil Edwards, Americana UK

Sunfields’ debut is the one we’ve been waiting for, with a tight-as-sin unit that finally brings the songwriter’s vision to life.
